Gas reconnection

Gas reconnection after a meter change or supply cap

Your supplier or the gas network has told you the installation needs checking by a Gas Safe engineer before the gas can go back on. We carry out those checks for shops, salons, offices and other business premises in Brighton and Sussex.

A business with no gas usually has no heating, no hot water and, for a salon or a cafe, no way to trade. The letter from the supplier rarely explains what happens next. It tends to say the installation must be checked before the supply is restored, and leaves you to find someone to do it.

That is the part we do. We carry out the safety checks needed before the gas can be restored and work with your supplier's requirements in mind, so that when the supply is turned back on it is going into an installation that has been tested and is safe to use.

What's included

  • Tightness test of the installation
  • Safety checks on every appliance
  • Flue and ventilation checks
  • Purge and relight once the supply is restored
  • Repairs to anything that fails, priced before we start
  • Written record of the checks for your supplier and your file

Why the gas is off

Gas is usually off for one of a handful of reasons. Each one means the installation should be checked before gas is used again.

  • The meter has been changed or moved
  • The supply was capped while the unit stood empty
  • The supply was disconnected and is now being restored
  • The gas emergency service turned it off after a reported smell or leak
  • A new tenant is moving into a unit that has had no gas
  • Building work has cut or altered the gas pipework

What the supplier or network is asking for

In plain terms, they want to know the pipework does not leak and the appliances are safe before gas flows through them again. The way to show that is a test and safety check by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Who physically removes a cap or turns a meter back on depends on why the gas was turned off and who turned it off. It might be your supplier, their meter operator or the gas network. Your letter, or a call to the supplier, will tell you. Whichever it is, we carry out the checks they need and can be on site to purge and relight the appliances when the supply is restored.

What we check

We start with a tightness test on the installation pipework, from the meter outlet to every appliance. If it holds, we check each appliance: that it is installed correctly, the flue and ventilation are right, and it operates safely. Once the supply is on, we purge the air out of the pipework and relight the appliances one by one.

If anything fails, you will know on the day what the problem is and what it costs to fix. If the gas was turned off because of a leak, we find and repair it first, then test again.

What to have ready

You will save time, and usually a second visit, if you have these to hand when you call:

  • The letter or email from your supplier or the gas network
  • Any job or reference number they gave you
  • Your meter point reference number (MPRN), if you have it
  • Any warning notice or label left on the meter or an appliance
  • Access to the meter and to every gas appliance
  • The make and model of the appliances, if you know them

Before you call

Gas reconnection: common questions

Can you remove the gas cap on my meter?

It depends on who capped it and why. Some caps can only be removed by the supplier, their meter operator or the gas network. Call us with your supplier's letter and we will tell you what applies, then carry out the safety checks needed before the gas can be restored.

My meter has been changed and the heating will not come back on. Can you help?

Yes. After a meter change the pipework often needs purging and the appliances relighting, and it is a good moment to have the installation tightness tested. Call 01273 044345 and we will arrange a visit.

How long does a reconnection check take?

For a single shop, salon or office with a small number of appliances, the checks are usually done in one visit. Larger premises, or an installation that fails a test, take longer. We will give you an idea when you tell us what is on site.

What if the installation fails?

We will explain what failed and give you a price for the repair. Once it is fixed we test again. We will not leave an unsafe appliance in use.

Do you work evenings or weekends?

No. We work Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:30, and we do not offer out-of-hours call-outs. If you smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency number on 0800 111 999 straight away.
