Haywards Heath & Mid Sussex

Commercial heating engineers in Haywards Heath and Mid Sussex

Boilers, plant rooms, heat pumps and commercial gas work for offices, business parks, schools, care homes and village halls across Mid Sussex, from our office in central Brighton.

Two Vaillant AroTherm heat pump units outside a completed new-build plot at Twineham Grange Farm, West Sussex

Mid Sussex is the district we reach most easily inland. Burgess Hill and Haywards Heath sit along the A23 corridor, about 10 and 14 miles north of our office at 1 Dukes Passage respectively, and a normal run from Brighton takes around half an hour outside peak traffic. Our most substantial job in the district so far is just west of Burgess Hill: six heat pump plant rooms across a new-build development at Twineham Grange Farm.

The commercial buildings here are a mix that does not look much like Brighton. There are business parks built from the 1950s onwards, an office centre in Haywards Heath, a district hospital, schools, care homes, and a long list of villages where the parish hall or church is the only heated building of any size. We work on all of them Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:30.

Burgess Hill business parks and the new employment land

Burgess Hill is one of the larger employment areas in the Gatwick Diamond, with around 300 companies in more than 1.8 million square feet of premises. Victoria Business Park, to the south west of the town, was completed as an industrial estate by 1956 and has grown since. Sheddingdean Business Park to the north dates from the 1980s, and Ditchling Common Industrial Estate and Bolney Business Park sit at the edges of the town.

Units of different ages need different things. Older industrial stock can carry gas pipework that several occupiers have extended over the years, so a tightness test or a commercial gas safety certificate is where most jobs start. When a unit changes hands, has a new meter or has had its supply capped, we carry out the checks needed to get the gas back on safely.

North of the A2300, Mid Sussex District Council has approved a Science and Technology Park next to the Northern Arc housing development. As new commercial floor space arrives, heat pump and hybrid plant will be a bigger part of the conversation, and we design and install both.

Haywards Heath offices, the hospital and civic buildings

Haywards Heath is the district's office centre and the home of Mid Sussex District Council, whose headquarters is Oaklands, a house built in 1866 on Oaklands Road. The Princess Royal Hospital, the main hospital for the district, is on the edge of the town. Buildings like these tend to run boiler plant that has been added to over decades, and the useful work is often a survey that sets out what is there, what is near the end of its life and what can be phased.

We have replaced the burner and gas valve on a 545kW boiler to keep a hospital's heating running, and we service modular boiler banks such as Hamworthy Modumax as approved service agents. For offices we can combine the heating and air conditioning servicing under one planned maintenance agreement, so one contractor holds the records for both.

Village halls, churches and heat pumps in the villages

Away from the two towns, Mid Sussex is a district of villages: Cuckfield, Lindfield, Hurstpierpoint, Ardingly, Balcombe, Bolney and many more. Lindfield's mile-long High Street is a conservation area, and the halls, churches and schools in places like it are often heated by one ageing boiler that runs a few hours a week.

For a building used in short bursts, the right answer is not always a like-for-like boiler. Sometimes it is a smaller, faster-responding boiler and better controls. Sometimes it is a heat pump, or a hybrid where a heat pump carries the base load and a boiler covers the cold days. At Twineham Grange we designed and installed six Vaillant AroTherm systems with underfloor heating, so we know what a heat pump needs from a building before recommending one. Where a heat pump will not suit, we say so.

Before you call

Mid Sussex: questions we get asked

How long does it take you to get to Haywards Heath or Burgess Hill?

Burgess Hill is about 10 miles from our Brighton office and Haywards Heath about 14, both reached via the A23, usually around half an hour outside peak traffic. Contract clients get priority breakdown response during working hours, Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:30, and there is no out-of-hours call-out service.

Can you heat a village hall or church that is only used a few times a week?

Yes. The aim is heat when the building is in use and protection against damp and frost the rest of the time, without paying to heat an empty hall. We look at the boiler, the emitters and the controls together, and give a written recommendation with options, including whether a heat pump or hybrid would genuinely work.

We have taken on a unit at a Burgess Hill business park. What gas checks do we need?

Usually a tightness test on the installation pipework and a commercial gas safety certificate for the appliances, and a reconnection if the supply was capped or the meter changed. We can do all three in one visit where the installation allows, and leave you the records your landlord and insurer will ask for.

Have you installed heat pumps in Mid Sussex?

Yes. We designed and installed six Vaillant AroTherm air source heat pump plant rooms, with over 300 square metres of underfloor heating per plot, at Twineham Grange Farm near Burgess Hill. We hold our own MCS accreditation and are RECC members.

Do you cover East Grinstead and the north of the district?

Yes. East Grinstead, Balcombe and Ardingly are further from Brighton than Haywards Heath, but they are covered for installations, maintenance contracts and one-off gas work in the same way, Monday to Friday.
