Commercial heating engineers in Lewes
Boilers, plant rooms and commercial gas work for the county town and the district around it, including the listed and conservation area buildings that make heating work in Lewes different. Around 20 minutes from our Brighton office.

Lewes is the county town of East Sussex and one of the closest towns to our office: about 8 miles from 1 Dukes Passage along the A27, usually around 20 minutes. Close enough that a survey, a gas safety check or a maintenance visit fits easily into a morning.
What sets Lewes apart is its building stock. The Lewes conservation area holds 504 listed buildings, eight of them Grade I, and many of the town centre's commercial buildings were built long before central heating. That shapes how a boiler replacement or a new plant room is planned here, and it is where most of this page goes.

Heating listed buildings and the conservation area
The Lewes conservation area was designated in 1970, in the first years of conservation areas nationally, and covers the historic heart of the town. Inside it are 504 listed buildings, including Lewes Castle and Harvey's Brewery, which is Grade II* listed.
For a heating contractor, that changes the order of work. A new flue terminal, an external heat pump or air conditioning condenser, or a change to a listed interior may need consent before anything is fitted, so the survey and the drawings come first and the plant is chosen to suit the building rather than the other way round. Routes for pipework and flues matter as much as the boiler itself.
We have done this kind of work before. For a Brighton synagogue we designed and built a complete new plant room in a building that was never designed around modern plant: two Ideal Evomax boilers in cascade, a plate heat exchanger, and a pump wall labelled so any engineer can read it. The same approach applies to a church, a listed office or a shop behind a Georgian front in Lewes.

County Hall, offices and the town's working buildings
Lewes is also an administrative town. East Sussex County Hall on St Anne's Crescent, completed in 1968, is the headquarters of East Sussex County Council and the meeting place of Lewes District Council. Around it is a mix of offices, courts, schools and shops, many in buildings that have had their heating replaced in pieces over the years.
In that kind of building the useful first step is usually a commercial gas safety certificate and a look at what the plant room really contains. From there we can put the boilers, and any air conditioning, on a single planned maintenance agreement with per-appliance records, or set out a phased replacement so the building keeps its heating while the work is done.
Newhaven, Seaford and the rest of the district
Lewes District runs from the Downs villages such as Ditchling and Kingston down to the coast at Newhaven, Seaford, Peacehaven and Telscombe, and north to Newick and Chailey. The coastal towns have their own mix of care homes, schools, port and industrial units and seafront property, and all of them are within easy reach of Brighton along the A259 or the A27.
Care homes are a large share of our maintenance work across Sussex, and they need hot water around the clock. For homes like these we build plant rooms with modular boilers and stored hot water with backup, so one fault never leaves residents without heat, and we service them at the frequency the plant needs.

Heating work in Lewes: common questions
Can you replace a boiler in a listed building in Lewes?
Yes. We survey first, then design the replacement around what the building allows: flue routes, plant positions and pipework runs. Where the work changes the building, such as a new flue terminal or external plant, consent may be needed before installation, and we provide the drawings and technical detail for that application. Your conservation officer or planning adviser decides what needs consent.
Can a heat pump work in a conservation area?
Sometimes. The questions are where the outdoor unit can go, whether the building can be heated well at the lower flow temperatures a heat pump runs at, and whether consent is needed. We are MCS certificated and will tell you honestly if a hybrid or a high-efficiency boiler is the better choice for an older Lewes building.
How far is Lewes from you?
About 8 miles from our office at 1 Dukes Passage in Brighton, usually around 20 minutes along the A27. We work Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:30, and contract clients get priority breakdown response in those hours. Out-of-hours call-outs are not something we provide.
Do you issue commercial gas safety certificates for Lewes shops and offices?
Yes. We are qualified for commercial Natural Gas and LPG and issue commercial gas safety certificates (CP17) for shops, offices, restaurants and other business premises. If the pipework needs a tightness test or the supply needs reconnecting after a meter change, we can do that on the same visit.
