Worthing and the Adur towns are the next stretch of coast west of Brighton. Shoreham-by-Sea is about 6 miles from our office and Worthing about 11, along the A27 or the A259, so a visit is usually 20 to 35 minutes away depending on traffic.

One of the care homes on our planned maintenance books is in Worthing, and that is not a coincidence. Care homes are a defining part of the town's commercial building stock, and they are the kind of building we are set up for: heating and hot water that cannot be allowed to stop.

Why care homes shape heating work in Worthing

Worthing has around 51 care homes, according to West Sussex County Council, and Adur has around 16 more. The 2021 census put the share of over-65s living in a care home higher in Worthing than anywhere else in England and Wales, at about 4.7 per cent, nearly double the national average.

A care home runs its heating and hot water every hour of every day, and residents feel any failure straight away. So the plant is designed for it: modular boilers so one fault never takes the home cold, stored hot water with a backup immersion, and controls that keep outlets at safe temperatures. On one recent care home we paired two Keston Heat 2 55kW boilers with a Rinnai hot water system and 500 litres of storage for exactly that reason.

Maintenance follows the same logic. We set the service frequency from the plant and the hours it runs, record combustion and safety checks per appliance, and report anything that needs attention with a price before it fails. For a care group with several homes along the coast, that can be one agreement with one schedule and one set of records.

Industrial estates, Shoreham Port and Lancing Business Park

The working side of the area is spread along the coast road. East Worthing Industrial Estate, which takes in Dominion Way, is the largest industrial area in Worthing, with about 105 units. Lancing Business Park, between Lancing and Worthing, is home to around 235 businesses, and Shoreham Port and the industrial land around it sit at the mouth of the Adur.

Most gas work on units like these is small and specific: a tightness test before a new occupier moves in, a commercial gas safety certificate for a landlord or insurer, a reconnection after a meter change, or purging and testing new pipework when a unit is fitted out. We do each of these as a single visit with the paperwork left on site, and we fit gas boosters and solenoid valves where a larger load needs them.

Seafront, civic and town centre buildings

Worthing grew as a seaside resort through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and its town centre still reflects that. Worthing Town Hall on Chapel Road, opened in 1933, is Grade II listed, and Adur & Worthing Councils, which serve both districts, work from it and from the Shoreham Centre on Pond Road. Older shops, offices and schools in the centre often have plant rooms that have been patched over several decades, and a survey and a written plan for phased replacement is usually a better use of money than a like-for-like swap.

Before you call

Worthing and Adur: questions we get asked

Do you already work in Worthing?

Yes. We have a care home in Worthing on planned maintenance, and we cover the whole coast between Brighton and Worthing. Our office is at 1 Dukes Passage in Brighton, about 11 miles away.

Can you take over maintenance of a care home's existing boilers?

Yes. Taking over plant fitted by another contractor is routine for us. On the first visit we survey it, bring the records up to date and set a service schedule from the plant and the hours it runs. Hot water plant, pressurisation and any air conditioning can go on the same agreement.

We are moving into a unit in Lancing. Do we need a gas safety certificate?

If there are gas appliances in a commercial unit, your landlord, insurer or lease will usually want a current commercial gas safety certificate, and a tightness test on the pipework is a sensible start for a new occupier. We can do both, and reconnect the supply if it was capped when the last tenant left.

What happens if our boiler breaks down at the weekend?

We work Monday to Friday, 08:00 to 17:30, and do not offer out-of-hours or weekend call-outs. Contract clients get priority breakdown response within those hours. For a care home that is one more reason to design in redundancy: with modular boilers and backup hot water, one fault on a Saturday does not leave residents cold.

Do you work in Shoreham-by-Sea and Southwick as well?

Yes. Shoreham and Southwick are about 6 miles from our office, closer than Worthing, and are covered in exactly the same way: installations, maintenance contracts and one-off gas work, Monday to Friday.
